A Gambeson is a padded cloth jacket, meant to either be worn as light armor by itself, or as a padded secondary layer of protection (and comfort) beneath chain mail or plate armor. Originally used as armor at least as early as the 10th century A.D., it later became a popular fashion in parts of Europe. This Gambeson features the traditional quilted padding common to the garment, with the addition of a decorative fringe at the waist and shoulders.
